Public Relations and Mentoring

Public Relations Director: 2015 — 2016

Background: Founded in 2008, Thomas Lay After-School Program connects at-risk Athens students with UGA student mentors in a fun, safe environment every afternoon. The organization enlists the leadership of a team of student volunteers and facilitates mentorship for dozens of Athens-area students each afternoon.

My role: As Public Relations Director, I created print materials for the organization, advertised, spoke on the program's behalf at events, managed social media accounts, and redesigned the organization's website by migrating it to a new platform. I also took photographs of mentors and mentees to use in promotional materials.

Challenges: My choices to redesign the organization's web presence stemmed from my concerns around leadership transitions and sustainability: I wanted to ensure that new leadership members could easily and successfully make changes to the web presence long after our board had changed. I was also tasked with logistics of advertising and circulating eye-catching print materials across campus. Because our print materials were often the first point of contact for new volunteers, my goal was to create high-impact designs with clear contact instructions.
